A historic milestone for Sardinia and its cultural heritage: after the long and complex process promoted by CESIM for the recognition of the Domus de Janas, UNESCO has officially approved the candidacy, marking the inscription of 18 monuments on the World Heritage List.

This achievement is the result of years of work, scientific research, protection and enhancement, which made it possible to demonstrate the outstanding universal value of these extraordinary archaeological monuments, a unique testimony to the pre-Nuragic civilization and the island’s millennia-old history.

The Domus de Janas, rock-cut tombs dating back to the Neolithic period, represent an invaluable heritage for understanding the funerary practices, beliefs, and social organization of ancient communities in the Western Mediterranean. With this recognition, UNESCO confirms their cultural, historical, and identity value on a global level.

The approval of the candidacy marks not only a moment of great pride, but also the beginning of a new phase, which will require a shared commitment to conservation, sustainable management, and promotion of the sites, so that they can be known and appreciated by an ever wider audience.

The recognition of the 18 Domus de Janas as a UNESCO World Heritage Site represents a collective victory and an extraordinary opportunity for the territory, the scientific community, and future generations.
